Conficker worm fails to strike so far

Posted by Paul Bradley
April 2nd, 2009

It’s been across the news this week - the threat of the new super virus called Conficker. As the clocks ticked to April 1st, it was alleged to awaken on millions of computers running Windows across the World.

The worry of this threat is, it was not known exactly what damage it would cause.  Those monitoring the progress of the worm said there was no evidence it was doing anything other than modifying itself to be harder to exterminate.

Vincent Weafer, vice president of Symantec said “We are going to be on high alert for a long time. Come 2nd April we will still be watching while most people will have moved their focus elsewhere,”

He added: “We believe the software is geared towards making money. The characteristic of this type of worm is to keep it slow and low, keep it under the radar to slowly maximise profits over the long term.”

So, the world waits with baited breath…

Snowed in? not when you’re online

Posted by Paul Bradley
February 3rd, 2009

Yesterday saw the UK grind to a halt under a whole 10cm of snow. Here in Leicester transport seemed to be still running, but the journey to the office took about twice as long. At least we all made it in one piece.

Not taking my usual stroll into town at lunchtime though, like I suspect many other workers in Leicester, must have hit a temporal blip in the already struggling profits of high street businesses.

I expect the flip side of this though, is that businesses who have moved shopping to the web through e-commerce will have felt a healthy raise in spending yesterday.

Today, the roads seem a little better than last night, so maybe this lunchtime I’ll walk in to Leicester to bring the high street economy back up to speed.
