It isn’t surprising to see the internet has become the main platform for many companies considering its high accessibility. Once it happened, SEO turned into an undeniably important part of digital business success. SEO transformed into a digital version of Maneki-Neko, a Japanese figurine which brings good luck and profit to its owner.

So, if you’re interested in reaping some online business benefits, you’ll find our guide on SEO-friendly web design invaluable.

How To Improve Your Business Website SEO

There are a few crucial tactics you can use to achieve worthwhile SEO results:

Make sure your web pages are fully indexable

Unfortunately, your excellent SEO work won’t be recognised if Google can’t fully index your web pages. However, it’s easy to avoid by following a few rules.

First, ensure there are only correct metatags in your Robots.txt. The ‘noindex’ tag is great when your web pages are under reconstruction. However, it’s important to remove it when the work is done and your web design is ready for viewing.

Second, search engines are seemingly fond of alt text as it struggles at identifying images. Don’t let them get stuck or worse – get confused over what your image is and what purpose you’ve used it with.  Describe your image if it has any important message or reference to the topic of your page. And don’t forget the keywords.

In general, when it comes to indexing web pages, search engines prefer simple web designs where everything is visible and easy to crawl. The best practice is to plan out your website structure in advance so you can avoid orphan pages and a general content mishmash.

Go simple but unique

To have an amazing website and give the best user experience you don’t need a lot of web pages. Quantity doesn’t mean quality and very often more pages mean more potential issues. So, the best advice here is to concentrate on the quality of your content and its uniqueness. The success of your web design isn’t based on reinventing the wheel. If it’s possible – make your website experience special. If not, don’t let your content become thin, outdated and duplicated. Neither users nor search engines will rate it highly. Moreover, if you have a lot of duplicated content, Google can remove your whole website from its index which is certainly worse. Sometimes canonical tags are necessary.

Don’t forget about human users

Optimising for search engines is undoubtedly important. However, you shouldn’t forget about creating great content for human users visiting your website. You’ll get not only followers and mentions of your website on other platforms but also increased search engine evaluation of your pages based on excellent user experience. So, search engines will rank your website higher and recommend it to new search requests.

Make your web design mobile-friendly

More and more web traffic comes to your website through mobile phones. Therefore, we recommend that you have your website mobile-friendly as it’s important to follow user behaviour trends. Even with a responsive site, mobile page speed, load time, images and other dynamic elements play a significant role in the mobile user experience.

Use your keywords

Using keywords in your text is all about the right balance. You shouldn’t keyword-stuff as loading your pages with too many keywords puts search engines off: they get confused about what the topic of your content is or worse – suspect that you are trying to cheat on them. And, believe us, they are far from liking it.

Overall, it’s not too difficult to turn your web design into an SEO-backed breadwinner. All you need to do is to follow this guide or ask the SEO professionals for help.

SEO For Companies

If you are wondering how to attract new customers to your business then we have an answer for you. Reaching potential customers is easy with Search Engine Optimisation! In the modern world, with so much competition presented on the market, it’s important to stand out. SEO is a marvellous marketing tool for this as it enables you to stand alongside big-budget brands. Generally speaking, good SEO does miracles: it can significantly expand your client base avoiding budget-damaging decisions. Let’s immerse a bit deeper into why SEO is such a splendid marketing option for big and small companies and what tips can make SEO work in your business field.

Why SEO Is So Important For Business?

As mentioned earlier, SEO is an excellent tool to attract new or existing clients and build or strengthen brand awareness and reputation. It doesn’t require great financial expenses, but time, effort and expertise. A well-designed SEO strategy can improve your business by boosting your revenue stream. It’s all about targeting the relevant to your business traffic. SEO requires a long-term commitment to creating high-quality content and analysis of results. However, it can turn into a HIGHLY rewarding practice.

Benefits of SEO For Business

There are numerous SEO benefits for any type of business. The most significant of them we’ve mentioned below:

  • Increased Online Visibility

Whenever a potential client searches for a specific service, your website can become the one they visit first thanks to the increased online visibility.

  • More Brand Awareness

Due to high-ranking positions in organic search, your brand will be easily remembered, recognised, and more trusted by its target audience.

  • Bigger Revenue & More Quality Leads

Greater targeted exposure will provide higher levels of revenue as more quality leads will follow your website.

  • ROI Improvement

So, if you’ve decided that SEO is what your company needs, there are a few tips we’re sharing that are highly effective and valuable.

Easy SEO Tips To Follow

Following these easy but useful SEO recommendations, you can achieve some amazing results for your  business.

So, how can you make your business successful and unique from an SEO perspective?

  • First, it’d be great to set up Google My Business. Since 46% of all Google searches are looking for local information. You should optimise your website for local SEO results so, for example, whenever a search user looks for ‘local (the service you offer)’ or ‘(service you offer) near me’ your website is always on the spot as it has lots to offer.

Google My Business helps your business SEO

  • Second, research relevant keywords. Before writing a post or making a page it’s always good to know what your targeted audience is interested in. There are plenty of excellent keyword research tools to choose from depending on your personal preferences. Develop this strategic standpoint to move forward.

Ahrefs is a great tool for SEO

  • Third, write some engaging, compelling content. Use the keywords you’ve found to rank on those specific terms. Keep the balance between being favoured by Google or a reader only and avoid keyword overstuffing as your potential client will find it hard to read and most likely will leave for a competitor.

Writing a promotional SEO post on the laptop.

  • Fourth, include backlinks and internal links. Backlinks are hyperlinks leading from someone else’s website to yours. They add credibility to your business. Internal links are even easier as they connect the pages of your own website. With the help of internal links, you can create a hierarchy and let Google know which content, article or post they should pay more attention to.

Conclusion

Start following the above-mentioned tips and after a few weeks, you will notice positive changes. If not, you can always contact us, at Unsworth Sugden Digital, and we’ll be happy to help you.

According to Semrush Sensor, it’s been an intense month so far with the volatility above the medium on most days. The lowest volatility score it’s had is 4.6 which is still quite high in comparison with the previous statistics. The highest it’s reached is 9.3, right after the announced big Google algorithm update in May 2022.

For 8th June 2022, the scores for desktop (7.9/10) and mobile (7.2/10) viewports are still high. They are even slightly higher throughout Europe, including France, Germany and Spain.

Such categories as People & Society, Autos & Vehicles, Beauty & Fitness, Books & Literature and Finance turned out to have the most unstable results.

Knowledge Panel stays the most frequently appearing SERP feature (37.16% + 0.41%), followed by Local Pack (13.04% -0.25%) and Top Stories (8.94% +0.75%). However, the Shopping results feature has improved its occurrence rate by 1.33% which is good news for eCommerce.

Semrush sensor graph showing SERP volatility

We observe plenty of tremors and instability in Google rankings since May 16, even though the official date of the first core broad update of the year was 25th May 2022. It has been rolling out for a few weeks now and yet it’s not finished.

In any case, it’s worth keeping an eye on your own website’s Google ranking to monitor its fluctuation and develop a new strategy for improvements.

Google Broad Core Update May 2022. What Is It?

As mentioned earlier, Google announced a new broad core update in May. According to the description, it doesn’t tackle any issue in particular but offers a general improvement to Google’s overall ranking processes. Therefore it’s been coming to make search results more relevant for users.

Danny Sullivan, Google’s Public Liaison for Search, mentioned that you can expect changes to site performance in search results.

“Core updates are changes we make to improve Search overall and keep pace with the changing nature of the web. While nothing in a core update is specific to any particular site, these updates may produce some noticeable changes to how sites perform…”

To summarise, the key aspects of Google updates are the following:

  • They’re described as ‘broad’ as they don’t target anything specific. It’s an overall improvement.
  • Reassessment of pages against other web content can drop their ratings.
  • A lost rating doesn’t mean penalisation. You should expect noticeable changes, such as spikes and drops in search rankings. The mission of the update is to prioritise great content.
  • Broad core updates focus on building a new search results hierarchy, based on the quality of content.
  • They happen every few months for refreshing reviving purposes and to encourage improvements. However, it’s not guaranteed these improvements will have delivered desirable results before the next update.

Is The New Google Broad Core Update Finished?

Yes and no. We have continuously observed plenty of turbulence caused by this Google update and yet it’s not completed. There’s been lots of chatter on SEO forums and social as everyone has been waiting for this update to come to the end.

Google will confirm when the update is completed, we are sure that it’s not long left until then. Yet if you have noticed a massive SEO impact on your website, don’t rush to carry out your analysis. Wait for the dust to settle before taking the necessary action.

Update

Google confirms the core algorithm update is officially complete.

Google is upgrading Smart Shopping and Local Campaigns. Now, with an easy one-click tool, you can change them to Performance Max versions, one by one or all at once. If you leave them as they are, then they will be upgraded automatically before September 2022.

Accordingly, Performance Max will be the only option for business companies, running Shopping and Local Campaigns.

In this article, we’ll discuss the reasons Google is replacing Smart Shopping and Local Campaigns with Performance Max and what the last can bring into the world of Google advertising.

What to Do Before Full Switching to Performance Max

First, there is no reason to worry. Performance Max will come without big setting changes. That is a big relief. So, if you have existing shopping ads, Performance Max won’t change them.

The only upgrades the program brings are new ad inventory, available across YouTube, Google search and discovery networks, and new automation insights.

We advise testing this new ad campaign type in advance before Smart Shopping and Local Campaigns tool leaves with a bang.  This way, you will know what to expect and how to work it effectively for the best business results.

To successfully start a Performance Max campaign, you should choose your additional creative assets for your asset groups, audience signals to indicate prospective conversions and the right budget.

To speak about audience signals in more detail, they are crucially important. Audience signals are true success providers in the automated Google jungle as they optimise your campaigns to attract more customers!

So, what is this new Google Ad campaign type?

What is Performance Max & How Can It Help Your Ads?

Performance Max is a new campaign type that allows access to all Google Ads inventory from a  single campaign. It helps you to find more customers across all of Google’s channels like YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail, and Maps.

By enrolling Performance Max, Google promises more conversions. It literally takes your ads and makes them better. So, all that is left for you to do is to give Google as much information as possible and in the end, to enjoy the fruit of Google optimisation. In fact, it’s very similar to Responsive Display Ads.

Advantages of Performance Max

Among plenty of Google Performance Max advantages, there are four most important ones:

  • New Audience Segments

Google uses consumers’ behavioural features and preferences across all the channels. This way your ads are shown to the right people at the right moment.

  • More Creative Targets

You are able to give Google your creative assets to find new customers. You can also observe which one of them brings the most results.

  • Easy Ad Optimisation

This new ad campaign type can automatically optimise your budget and bids for better performance across all the channels.

  • More Data Insights

You are able to observe which audience segments and image combinations are having the most success in reaching users.

Additional Controls

Except for the benefits of Performance Max, there are also a few additional controls, such as:

  • budget & bidding
  • location, language & ad scheduling
  • advanced URL choices
  • asset groups set up
  • the automated targeting
  • ad extension set up

Drawbacks

As for the disadvantages of Performance Max, a lack of reporting is the most obvious one. For example, it’s impossible to report on performances by asset group or targeting. It makes it clear that it’ll be impossible to tell who’s seen your ads and to add exclusions for audiences, keywords and demographics.

It’s obvious that Google Ad campaigns will never be the same thanks to Performance Max. More automation comes into the game and we have to take it into account. A little preparation before big changes is necessary. Get to know Performance Max type to achieve great Google Ad results in the soonest future.

Google Brings Down the Curtain on Google Universal Analytics, In July 2023

In a year and a few months, on July 1, 2023, Universal Analytics will cease to process new data and Google Analytics 4 will take its place.

Universal Analytics 360 properties will continue the work of data processing until October 1, 2023.

And then, the new era of Google Analytics will fully begin.

Why Does Google Discontinue Google Universal Analytics?

A couple of years ago, the Google team humbly presented their new product – Google Analytics 4. The appearance of this new software meant significant changes approaching. And now, they are waiting outside the door, and we can hear them knocking.

Before letting them in, make sure that you’ve set up Google Analytics 4 and use it whilst still running your Universal Analytics. This way, you’ll allow the new program to build important historic data that it won’t initially have. Collect as many meaningful reports as you can to feel confident with your decisions in the future.

So, Google Analytics 4 doesn’t have important data reports available, but it has plenty of other beneficial features which we’ll discuss next.

What Are the Advantages of Google Analytics 4 over Universal Analytics?

As mentioned earlier, Google Analytics 4 doesn’t have access to necessary data. However, it doesn’t affect its general excellent performance.

Google Analytics 4 or GA4 is great when it comes to insight collecting. Unlike Universal Analytics, GA4 is capable to collect and process information from versatile platforms. It measures data across both websites & apps which is extremely important nowadays. It also uses an event-based data model that enables GA4 to monitor across multiple platforms.

Moreover, unlike Universal Analytics, GA4 does not rely on cookies. This is one more reason you should keep Universal Analytics running for as long as possible to make the most of third-party cookies. As GA4 will not allow you to do so. GA4 only relies on first-party cookies as Google has chosen the tactics of new privacy development. Lately, it mostly uses insights and predictions powered by machine learning. The general discontinuation of cookies utilising isn’t beyond the sunset.

In addition, GA4 is here to protect web users’ privacy because nothing else can be more important than safety.

Other Bonuses of Google Analytics 4

Here are a few more benefits of Google Analytics 4:

  • A better understanding of what customers expect from your business

“(..) people’s needs are rapidly changing and you have to make real-time decisions in order to win – and keep – new customers. Based on your feedback, we simplified and re-organized reporting so you can intuitively find marketing insights based on the part of the customer journey you’re interested in.”

  • A new effective approach to data control

“Because the technology landscape continues to evolve, the new Analytics is designed to adapt to a future with or without cookies or identifiers. It uses a flexible approach to measurement, and in the future, will include modelling to fill in the gaps where the data may be incomplete.”

  • More valuable & actionable data

Machine learning helps to observe user behaviour and conversions, and create new users audiences. Integration of Google products helps to collect the combined web and app data. This way it makes ad campaign optimisation easy.

The world evolves and needs new changes which can make processes easier and more protected. Google Analytics 4 is one of them. The necessity of platform integration and web users’ security is impossible to overlook. GA4 is one more step into the future where machine learning domineers over human influence. Get ready as it happens very soon, – July 1, 2023.

Our USD team is more than ready to go. We will ensure that we have a full year’s worth of data to monitor the progress of our existing campaigns.

Google Expanded Text Ads (ETAs) Are Coming to A Halt in June 2022

From the 30th of June 2022, expanded text ads will continue to work but in a different mode. Users will no longer be able to create new or edit existing expanded text ads. However, the pause, resume & remove functions will still be available.

What does it mean?

The discontinuation of google expanded text ads means the strengthening of responsive search ads (RSAs) in the arena of Google advertising. Even though, according to the study, 75% of google ads accounts already use RSAs.

This move was expected after the transition of the default ad creation type from ETAs to RSAs in the user interface. It means that advertisers will have less control over ad progress as Responsive search ads offer limited data and control with a specific headline and description line positioning.

Nevertheless, RSAs have their own benefits over Expanded text ads.

What Advantages & Drawbacks Do Responsive Search Ads Have Over ETAs?

The main advantage of RSAs is a thorough content study. These ads are highly intelligent and able to scan an enormous amount of information to choose the best performing ads for the future. Thanks to this, they also limit spending on the ads which perform unwell.

Second, Responsive Search Ads are incredibly flexible & adaptive to your device width.

Third, they are versatile. RSAs enable you to unleash your creativity and add more useful information to attract a viewer’s choice.

Forth, they use Google Algorithm reducing the time of testing new ad copies, targeted to your potential customers.

What about their drawbacks?

As mentioned earlier, one of the main drawbacks of RSAs is a lack of control. Google is in charge, and it decides what your ad copy will look like by combining your headlines and descriptions in the way it thinks best. Moreover, it doesn’t let you preview your ad and doesn’t work its best with granular types of ads.

Here is our example

However, RSAs are great when it comes to generic campaigns. You can use different keywords for your ad groups and include lots of product or service details. It all enables your ads to compete in more auctions and match more queries.

Especially, according to Google internet data, global, 2021: ‘Advertisers that switch from expanded text ads to responsive search ads, using the same assets, see an average of 7% more conversions at a similar cost per conversion.’

All in all, Responsive Search Ads help their users to achieve more potential customers than Expanded Text Ads. Besides, you reduce manual effort and save lots of time on creating RSAs. They are good for users with little or no Google Ads experience as they are completely based on Google knowledge.

Therefore, the suspension of ETAs has been utterly predictable.

What Is the Digital Services Tax?

In April 2020 the UK government announced they would be introducing a new tax on large multi-national enterprises operating within the digital economy with a turnover of over £500m in the UK market. This will be a 2% tax applied to revenues on search engines, social media services and online marketplaces. With this impacting a range of enterprises from search engines such as Google through to social media platforms such as Facebook, it is sure to be wide reaching.

When Does This Come Into Effect?

As of 1st April 2020 this digital tax came into effect. Platforms such as Google have recently announced that they will be passing this cost onto their clients. As of November 2020 they will be charging an additional fee for ads served on their platforms such as Google and YouTube. Some platforms such as Amazon have also announced they will be passing this additional cost onto clients, other platforms are expected to follow suit.

How Will This Impact Me?

If you are operating within one of these platforms this cost will unfortunately be passed across to you. If you serve ads on search engine platforms such as Google and YouTube this will come into effect from November 2020. As other platforms are expected to follow suit this may also be the case across other advertising platforms. If you would like more information, the following links can explain in more detail:

If You Are Not Online, Now Is The Time

Lockdown

One thing lockdown has highlighted is the importance of being online. E-commerce sales have soared as shops were shut, highlighting the importance of online marketing. We are living in crazy and unpredictable times but there are two things that we can be sure about. The fact that COVID-19 is temporary and in the grand scheme of things it’s short-term, the second is that keeping your foot on the gas now will only leave you in a better position once the pandemic has passed in terms of SEO. After all, businesses will get back to normal and you need to be in a prime position to hit the ground running on the other side of the pandemic.

Always Look On The Bright Side of SEO…

  • Shopping from home and browsing the internet is at its peak. Many are self-isolating and digital content is exploding at present.
  • The future is, and will be, online marketing. The period we are in is a glimpse into our future. More people working from home, with technology still coming on leaps and bounds to bring VR reality into our life without the need to leave the house for an immersive shopping experience. Take a look at Amazon now, one of the worlds biggest enterprises. They certainly aren’t freezing up, in fact they have just opened up 100,000 new jobs to deal with the surge of online activity.
  • The competition might be thinner during the pandemic as many are weary and hesitant to act, trying their best to cut their costs. This is a great time to take advantage of that and gain a competitive edge not just for now but also when things turn back to reality and a natural uptake across all industries sets in.

What Should I Do About SEO During Lockdown?

We are in a time of panic as businesses across the country adopt new ways to cope with the lockdown, and it’s easy to stop a service that you are paying money for on a monthly basis. With SEO we NEED to look at the bigger picture because unlike PPC you can’t just turn an SEO service off without having significant consequences down the line.

Our advice is that if you can sustain your SEO activity at this time then we highly recommend you do so.

Why Should I Keep SEO During Lockdown?

SEO takes time to build up and establish, in most cases this is months or even years. It’s all about gaining that trust with Google, showing them that you are an authority in your specific sector. You will have spent money each month on getting your site ranking well for keywords, and in return capitalising on traffic and in term direct business enquiries.

If you stop SEO, then 3 or 4 months down the line your rankings will start to fall, and so will your traffic and your leads, impacting the work that has been done to get you where you are today.

Keeping a competitive edge, good momentum and stabilisation of your rankings at this important time is crucial. Once COVID-19 has passed you will not only be in a strong position, but there is a good chance you will be in an even better position due to competitors who chose to cease SEO work.

What Should I Do About PPC During Lockdown?

PPC is easy to switch on and off at the drop of a hat, you can simply pause and start with no consequences, other than immediate and controlled traffic losses aligned with the spend cut. So, we recommend that if your businesses are suffering during these difficult times then pausing PPC is a good and quick way to save money. However, if you are in an industry whereby your services are unaffected or adaptable, then there should be no change to your PPC strategy unless you notice any downturn in leads.

At USdigital we are ready to adapt to any situation that gets thrown at us, and it is that very proactive stance that allows us to see the benefits to implement into your digital strategy. We have been around nearly half a century and we are still here today.

We hope that you all stay safe and well, and should you need to discuss any concerns with us, please get in touch.

The start of February 2020 has certainly been an interesting month with regards to a potential Google algorithm update. There has been plenty of low lying chatter throughout various chat rooms and forums. This is also reflected in sensors which are picking up signs of volatility. These shock waves do not, as yet, appear to be anything major but there is certainly still some movement.

The UK has been showing SERP volatility on both desktop and mobile viewports beginning Feb 1st 2020 and continuing through the weekend and into the early stages of the week. We do not yet quite know the implications of these shock waves and as ever Google is typically mute on the topic! We will continue to monitor the sensors and search engine result pages and see if we can discover more. From our end we can only see positive movements for rankings and traffic!

February 8th Search Update – Something Big Happening?

Through the weekend beginning Saturday 8th February 2020, sensors have been picking up signs of a potentially massive Google algorithm update. SEMRush sensor has been throwing up some massive scores well in excess of 9.0/10 throughout the UK! This is consistent throughout locations in both Europe and the US on both desktop and mobile viewports. Whatever Google is rolling out, it is safe to assume it is going to be a big one!

SEMrush Sensor – Google s rank and algorithm tracking tool SEMrush

There has been speculation as to whether Google’s featured snippet update (see below) could have some impact upon fluctuation. However, it has been confirmed this update is unlikely to impact scores. The scores that are being thrown up by sensors appear to be correct. Google is yet to comment on the matter. As the rollout continues and more becomes clear we are sure to learn more about its impact and intentions. Until then, sit tight until it blows over!

January 2020 Core Update

With the release of the January 2020 Core Update, as named by Google themselves, we can be sure that 2020 promises to be another interesting year. Although they are typically vague when explaining what aspect of search this update will impact, it would be wise to follow previous guidelines. As the emphasis on search intent and context becomes ever more prominent, be sure to optimise your content for the user!

January 2020 Featured Snippet Update

Another interesting development that January 2020 brought us was their change to featured snippets. Featured snippets are the boxes of information that will summarise a search query and can be found at the top of the organic listings. Before this update it was possible to be able to hold the featured snippet position for a given search term and also rank in the organic listing with the same URL for the search term. Sadly this is no longer! Danny Sullivan, of Google, announced that they would no longer be repeating web pages in the search results. They claim it will help to declutter the result pages and help users to locate relevant information more easily. Makes sense! This makes the importance of clear, concise and well structured content even more important!
